If you need assistance with registering your vehicle in a new state, updating the name on a title, or understanding the process after a loan is paid off, our experienced team is ready to assist you.
Purchase/Refinance - how do I register my RVCU vehicle?
Congratulations on your new vehicle! To register it, you'll first need to have the title transferred into your name. Please note that the process and timeline for this can differ based on how you obtained the vehicle.
- Dealership Purchase: If you bought your vehicle from a local dealership, you will need to reach out to the title clerk at the dealership to check on the status of your title.
- Private Seller/Refinanced from Another Financial Institution: If you purchased the vehicle from a private seller or refinanced through another financial institution, River Valley Credit Union will handle your title work with the county clerk's office. Please allow 3-4 weeks to receive a memorandum title or the necessary documentation to register your vehicle. In some rare instances, we may require your help to complete the title work, and if that happens, we will inform you.
Please check with your local BMV/DMV title office for additional information and requirements.
The credit union does not keep copies of memorandum titles. If you need another copy, you can request one at your local title office. Be sure to bring a state-issued photo ID and payment to cover the fee for a printed copy. Fees can be found on the title office's website.
Vehicle inspections are typically available at most BMV locations, sheriff's offices, or dealerships. It's a good idea to call ahead to verify their availability.
I paid off my RVCU loan - now what?

The lien holder (in this case, RVCU) will inform the DMV, either electronically or through submitted paperwork, to indicate that you have paid off your loan. There may be a delay to ensure that the loan payoff funds clear your account and to allow time for the title paperwork to be processed.
Your title may be held in one of two forms: either as a paper title or an electronic title.
- For paper titles held with RVCU, they will be sent to your address on file within 14 business days.
- You can check if your title is held as an electronic title and confirm its release by visiting . Once released, you can visit any County Clerk of Courts Title Office to obtain a clear, paid-in-full title (fees may apply at the Title Office). To find County Clerk of Courts offices or for more information, visit .
Once you have your title, keep it in a secure and easily memorable location, such as a fireproof lock box. This way, when you're ready to trade in or sell the vehicle, you'll have no trouble finding it.
The Electronic Lien and Title Program is a system that enables certain state BMVs and lending institutions (lien holders) to exchange vehicle and title information electronically. This process allows the BMV to transmit information directly to the lien holder, eliminating the need to print and mail paper titles. Once the loan is paid off, the lien holder sends an electronic message to release the title.
Once the loan is fully paid, there is a standard processing period of 10 business days, after which you will receive a paid-in-full letter by mail, containing information regarding your title.
Unfortunately, no. We do not keep titles at RVCU office locations. Your paid-in-full letter, which includes title information, will be sent to your address on file 10 business days after the loan is fully paid.
